Starting from 2021, in order to ensure driver safety and improve traffic flow in mountainous areas, the Mountain Law requires motorists to equip their vehicles with winter tires or approved all-season tires (bearing the 3PMSF and/or M+S logos), or, failing that, to carry removable anti-skid devices such as snow chains or snow socks for at least two of their drive wheels.
Please note that starting from November 1, 2024, tires marked with the M+S symbol will no longer be accepted.
Decree No. 2020-1264, known as the Mountain Law, also requires the use of snow chains on at least two of the drive wheels of heavy trucks, even if these vehicles are already equipped with winter tires. Failure to comply with this law exposes drivers to a fine of 135 euros, as well as the possibility of vehicle immobilization.
